Allergy Free Breads (updated)

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
The below document lists the bread available on the UK supermarkets and links each product to the shops it is available in (Tesco etc). This is an updated list including rolls and croissants, we will try to add further items soon.

Please note that the allergy information in the document has been collated from the food labels and web site information; whilst all possible care has been taken to ensure it is correct you must check the product label yourself if you have any concerns or severe allergic reactions.

Egg Allergy?

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

We have just found out that the daughter with a wheat allergy is also allergic to egg which does complicate things!!! The Genius Bread that we have been so pleased with is no use to her as it contains egg (oddly she has refused it anyway, perhaps she realised before we did!!).

I am now thinking a bit more about the egg and dairy allergies and the information we are posting on this blog. For example the next blog will be an updated list of bread but it doesn't list those breads that are egg and dairy free unless they are also wheat or gluten free. Perhaps I should look at it again??

Please let me know if this would be useful to you?

Supermarket Bread

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

We added an entry about Genius Bread a few weeks ago but what other allergy free bread is available?

The below document lists the bread available on the UK supermarkets and contains links to their websites. We will try and add rolls and other bread type things in the next couple of days and then also add links to other retailers.

Please note that the allergy information in the document has been collated from the food labels and web site information; whilst all possible care has been taken to ensure it is correct you must check the product label yourself if you have any concerns or sever allergic reactions.

Dairy Free Chocolate

I recently wanted to buy some Dairy Free Chocolate for a friend and was very surprised by the number of products available on the internet. Not knowing which are good (or better than the others!) I thought I would add it to the blog and see if you can recommend any to me!

The below links are some but probably not all of the dairy free chocolate products available in the UK. Interestingly some of them also list chocolate for other food allergies such as wheat, nuts and soya.

Recognition and Assessment of Coeliac Disease

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

NICE (the National Institute for Clinical Excellence) has released new guidelines for the recognition and assessment of Coeliac Disease. This guidance is available on the NICE website (see below link) and should be used by all GP's to support the diagnosis of the disease.

The website states:

This guideline offers best practice advice on the recognition and assessment of coeliac disease and the care of children and adults who are undergoing the diagnostic process for coeliac disease.

Curry

Supermarket ready prepared curry, are there any allergen free ones?

Finding supermarket curry for a gluten free, wheat free, egg free or dairy free diet proved more difficult than we thought. Matching the Coeliac lists to the actual supermarket product proved to be as hard as ever and as normal many products do not state if they are free from any allergens.

The below attachment is our first effort and we will try and add to it in the next few days. If you think we have missed any products please let us know.

Please note that the allergy information in the document has been collated from the food labels and web site information; whilst all possible care has been taken to ensure it is correct you must check the product label yourself if you have any concerns or sever allergic reactions.

Will Restaurants Heat Allergen Free Food for you?

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

We have recently been away on holiday and decided to take our own food to restaurants for our youngest daughter who can't eat wheat. We took ready meals so they were sealed and had cooking instructions and were surprised to find that most places would heat it through with some persuasion. We did find however that some National Trust restaurants were very awkward stating that they couldn't microwave the meal as it may be too hot and the child might get burnt!!!

The lesson is that if you are polite but persistant then most places will help you with food intolerances. We didn't try any expensive restaurants however but again I would expect them to cater for food allergies but perhaps with some notice.
